The 6th-grade students are learning about DNA and heredity. They had the chance to extract DNA from strawberries using a soluble mixture and ethanol. The white stringy substance is the actual DNA!

National School Counseling Week is coming up during the week of February 2-6, 2026, and we wanted to use this as an opportunity to say thank you to our amazing families for your continued support and partnership! We truly value working together to help students grow, build confidence, learn problem-solving skills, and feel supported at school. Your encouragement and involvement make a big difference in creating a positive school community where every student can thrive. We are so grateful to be part of your child’s journey here at New Salem-Almont Schools and appreciate all that you do to help build caring, resilient, and lifelong learners!

On Thursday, the 7th-8th grade STEM students had the opportunity to visit kindergarten and assisted them with building catapults. This gives the older students a chance to mentor the kindergartens with a fun and STEM originated activity. STEM plans to visit them twice a month with a new building activity where they can learn new techniques from one another.

No School January 30th
We will be having school today, starting at 10:00AM. Buses will be running, and we will contact the appropriate people on their routes if we have bus delays.
Please makes sure kids are dressed appropriately, and this includes high school students.
As always, the decision to send your child to school is up to you but please let the school and bus driver know in advance. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this January weather.

Two-Hour Late Start Friday:

Given that we operate seven routes and require two additional buses as stand-byes in this type of weather, the best decision is to implement a two-hour late start tomorrow. Even when buses are plugged in, they are sitting outside in the extreme cold which has previously resulted in mechanical issues, leaving us short-handed and having to make last-minute adjustments.
As always, parents/guardians, please notify the school and your bus driver (if applicable) if your child will not be attending school tomorrow.

Reminder of the New Salem-Almont Winter Weather Announcement:

Prior to the consideration for any type of closure, delay, or early release, the school district will first consider the type, timing, and track and likelihood of inclement weather. We also assess how the inclement weather will impact travel conditions for buses, parents with drop-offs and our students who drive to school. Last, we need to consider the ability of our staff to open buildings prior to the beginning of the school day.

A typical weather event includes monitoring the National Weather Service and weather channels, driving on rural roads, discussions with road crews and families that live in different parts of the District to get the best possible assessment on the weather and conditions.

Depending on the track and timing of the weather event, this type of information-gathering typically occurs throughout the preceding day into the night before the event, and very early in the morning on the day of the event. Our communication plan is, whenever possible, to inform families by 9:00 pm the preceding night or by 6:30 am on the morning of the event if a closure or late start is necessary. This timeline is followed to allow the school to adequately plan, but also recognize the necessity for families, childcare and the workforce to plan.

While some may be frustrated by an early morning call, we use 6:30 am, at the latest, due to the pickup schedules of our rural bus drivers. We also post the information on Facebook and our website much earlier than 6:30AM. If we do adjust the schedule due to weather, we will generally either start late or cancel school all together. When we start late, this may be for a few different reasons. It may be because the daylight will help those needing to drive early in the morning, such as our bus drivers, or it may be because our community needs that additional time to reasonably get to school. In some cases that a late start is used to provide the district with additional time to assess the tracking and severity of the weather impact.

When a late start decision is made, we will outline whether it is a 1-hour (9:00AM) or 2-hour late start (10:00AM). This schedule is as simple as it sounds. If you typically drop your child off by 8:00a.m. and we have announced the 2-hour late start, plan to drop them off by 10:00a.m.

We do this for two reasons. First, it’s straightforward for students who ride the bus—if we say “two hours late,” they know their pickup will be about two hours later than usual. Second, because our elementary and high school start times differ slightly, beginning at either 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. is the most efficient way to align with the 6–12 bell schedule.

In the end, each family can make the decision whether they want to send their children to school. We appreciate your patience and understanding of the dynamics of making school-related decisions, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the school.
