Reminder of the New Salem-Almont Winter Weather Announcement:

Prior to the consideration for any type of closure, delay, or early release, the school district will first consider the type, timing, and track and likelihood of inclement weather. We also assess how the inclement weather will impact travel conditions for buses, parents with drop-offs and our students who drive to school. Last, we need to consider the ability of our staff to open buildings prior to the beginning of the school day.

A typical weather event includes monitoring the National Weather Service and weather channels, driving on rural roads, discussions with road crews and families that live in different parts of the District to get the best possible assessment on the weather and conditions.

Depending on the track and timing of the weather event, this type of information-gathering typically occurs throughout the preceding day into the night before the event, and very early in the morning on the day of the event. Our communication plan is, whenever possible, to inform families by 9:00 pm the preceding night or by 6:30 am on the morning of the event if a closure or late start is necessary. This timeline is followed to allow the school to adequately plan, but also recognize the necessity for families, childcare and the workforce to plan.

While some may be frustrated by an early morning call, we use 6:30 am, at the latest, due to the pickup schedules of our rural bus drivers. We also post the information on Facebook and our website much earlier than 6:30AM. If we do adjust the schedule due to weather, we will generally either start late or cancel school all together. When we start late, this may be for a few different reasons. It may be because the daylight will help those needing to drive early in the morning, such as our bus drivers, or it may be because our community needs that additional time to reasonably get to school. In some cases that a late start is used to provide the district with additional time to assess the tracking and severity of the weather impact.

When a late start decision is made, we will outline whether it is a 1-hour (9:00AM) or 2-hour late start (10:00AM). This schedule is as simple as it sounds. If you typically drop your child off by 8:00a.m. and we have announced the 2-hour late start, plan to drop them off by 10:00a.m.

We do this for two reasons. First, it’s straightforward for students who ride the bus—if we say “two hours late,” they know their pickup will be about two hours later than usual. Second, because our elementary and high school start times differ slightly, beginning at either 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. is the most efficient way to align with the 6–12 bell schedule.

In the end, each family can make the decision whether they want to send their children to school. We appreciate your patience and understanding of the dynamics of making school-related decisions, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the school.

The decision has been made to dismiss school at 2:45 today (Friday, January 16) and busses will run where possible. Parents of bus students-if you want to come get your child(ren) early or don't want them to ride the bus, please call the school and let us know.

Reminder that we will have school today; parents are always encouraged to make their own decision on the weather depending where they live out in the country.

I believe the no travel will be lifted as the snow dissipates and the sun rises. Each bus driver can and will make the decision to turn around if conditions should warrant it.

We are proud to share that New Salem–Almont High School earned the 2nd highest high school accountability score in North Dakota! This included exceptional state assessment results, ranking #5 in high school math and #6 in high school reading statewide.

While this score is reported at the high school level, it reflects the strength of our entire K–12 district. Strong foundations built at the elementary and middle school levels play a critical role in long-term student success.

That growth is evident across the district, including Prairie View Elementary, which saw a 15% increase in overall performance from last year — a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students and staff.

This achievement belongs to our teachers, students, and community. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished together and will continue to focus on engaging, empowering, and elevating students for success.

As school starts back up on Monday, we wanted to share a few reminders about sickness and school. With so many winter illnesses going around, we’re doing our best to keep students and staff healthy, and to make sure anyone who isn’t feeling well has time to rest and recover at home.
