There will be no school on Friday, December 11. We are taking this day off to give teachers a mental health day. All of our teachers need to prepare lesson plans for the students they have in class and this year, the ones that are at home learning. We appreciate the fact that we can hold school in-person five days a week when many other schools use hybrid schedules, but it does take a toll when preparing for the different modes of instruction. Teachers that must be out of the building due to COVID all have continued to prepare lessons and, in many instances, go" live" or record on their online platform to continue to teach while caring for their own children at home. So, on December 11, we say thank you educators for all you do!

New Salem-Almont Covid-19 Update 10/26/2020: When the Health and Safety plan was put together for New Salem-Almont, the number one priority was keeping kids in school. To do this, we have increased a variety of protocols such as cleaning, social distancing, and handwashing. However, unlike so many other schools in the state, the one CDC guideline we have not followed is requiring masks. The school board feels that this is up to each individual to decide. Masks who would have thought that this word would become such a polarizing issue? Everyone has their own thoughts on whether or not masks are beneficial, I know my feeling have changed. It’s never easy to call a parent to tell them that their son or daughter can’t be in school, and telling a student that they can’t be in school and extracurricular activities is even more difficult. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the end of the world, but we can start being more proactive and take some control back over this pandemic. After moving grades 9-12 to our Distance Learning model for a week, we are happy to have them back in school. I am also happy to report 90% of 7-12 students are wearing masks in the high school; the statement is clear-they want to be in school, around friends, and participate in extra-curricular activities. This past Monday, we had to send home forty elementary students because of one positive case. Even though staff members are required to wear masks students are not. Sending all of these kids home creates a whole new hardship on the parents and their jobs as well as their child’s education. I ask you to consider having your child wear a mask when they cannot socially distance themselves from classmates and we will arrange seating charts accordingly so close contacts can stay in school. There is a survey for parents to take on the school’s Facebook account to help us gather thoughts on wearing masks in school. If you have questions or concerns, please call me at 843-7610.

We have had 78% of our student surveys filled out, that is awesome and thank you! Please continue to share on Facebook as it is due Friday. I do want to clarify that parents will have until August 17 to make that final decision on whether to send their children to school for face to face (if we are in the green phase) or go the distance education route. August 17 is the day before school. If a students chooses the distance learning route it will be a semester commitment which will allow us to provide the best possible distance educational plan for your child.
