State CTE Board Awards $10 Million Grant to Heart River CTE Center
Mandan, North Dakota — The Heart River Career and Technical Education Center was awarded $10 million by the State Board of Career and Technical Education on Monday, March 14. These funds were part of the Career and Technical Education Capital Projects Grant provided by the North Dakota Legislature in 2021. This funding will provide the ability to expand and develop CTE programs that offer valuable educational and technical experience for students from nine central and western North Dakota high schools, including Beulah, Center-Stanton, Flasher, Glen Ullin, Hebron, Mandan, New Salem, Selfridge and Solen-Cannonball.
The funds from this grant will support the construction of The Heart River Career and Technical Education Center, which will be a part of the new Mandan High School along with CTE programs in Beulah, Hebron, and New Salem/Almont high schools. “The New Salem – Almont school district is excited to partner with area schools through the Heart River CTE grant. This grant will provide the district with additional, much needed space to expand offerings in the career and technology fields and the ability to collaborate and share resources that will positively impact area students,” said Brian Christopherson, New Salem-Almont Schools Superintendent.
The Heart River CTE Center governing board will be formed over the next year with plans to develop high-quality CTE programs in all member schools. “The grant gives us the means to build a facility with more space and give our kids the best opportunities for future careers,” said Myron Schaff, Superintendent at Hebron Public Schools. “We plan to build a separate building across the street from the high school where our current Ag program can be expanded to offer additional CTE avenues like meat processing.”
The development of the Heart River CTE Center will provide schools and our business partners in the region the opportunity to partner in ways that have been limited until this time. Having a dedicated center to serve the west-central part of North Dakota will support our students, educators, adult learners, and businesses in the area. “Mandan Public School is excited to have the opportunity to create learning environments and educational opportunities that meet the workforce needs of our region,” stated Dr. Mike Bitz, Superintendent at Mandan Public School.
